Atlantis Aquaventure is huge and has some very neat water slides and a great rapids river called the Current, but it’s not so much better than the Orlando parks to merit the price difference. In fact, we’d say the Orlando parks are easier to navigate and better planned for practical touring. All that said, Atlantis as a whole is pretty spectacular and a unique destination. The Dig, the predator lagoons, the Aquaventure park and the art and the architecture are all unlike anything anywhere else (except maybe the other Atlantis resorts), so it’s very hard to say what it’s worth. If you have people in your party who love water parks, or love aquariums, it’s probably worth a visit. If you find the architecture intriguing, you’ll like it even better up close.

Repeat passengers get an early booking advantage based on the number of times they’ve cruised with Disney. Finally, Disney works with tour providers to put just a bit more magic into Disney excursions. For example, many private rainforest tours include snacks around a campfire at the end — but only Disney Guests get to make s’mores. Payment terms are typically much more flexible for Disney excursions, whereas privately-booked excursions may require payment in full up-front and might be nonrefundable. You’ll board air-conditioned transportation and ride approximately 75 minutes through one of North America’s largest Chinatown districts, a gorgeous park system, and downtown Vancouver.

For example, if I’ve been on a few more cruises than my husband (lucky me) and my Castaway status is higher than his, I can make excursion reservations for both of us at my higher status level. However, if we’re also traveling with our neighbors, First Time Cruisers staying in another stateroom, even though they are part of our party, they can not take advantage of my higher status level. Effectively, Castaway status on any particular cruise is applied by stateroom, not by the total party. New Disney Cruise Line guests are often confused about booking port excursions during their sailing. If you don’t want to pay for a day pass, there are a few areas of Atlantis that are free to visit, most notably the casino, shops and restaurants in and around the Coral Towers.

If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice. And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home. There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes.
No matter what you call it, a port adventure is something to do off the ship (in port) that you book through the cruise line. Port Adventures might be as simple and inexpensive as renting a bicycle for an hour or as extravagant and pricey as a private helicopter and dogsledding tour of a glacier. Atlantis is a truly massive resort and casino on Paradise Island, about a 15-minute drive from the cruise terminal. It’s one of the most popular destinations for cruise-ship passengers in Nassau, largely because of its massive water park, Aquaventure. Atlantis is located right on Cabbage Beach, perhaps the most beautiful of all Bahamas beaches, and it has an enormous casino and lots of high-end restaurants and shopping.

But there are a few things to consider before you book something outside of Disney. Disney Cruise Line sailings will begin visiting Lookout Cay starting this summer. This will be Disney’s second private destination in The Bahamas, joining Disney’s Castaway Cay. In addition to Port Adventures, the destination will also offer the Goombay Cultural Center, entertainment at Triton’s Trumpet Stage, and locally made gifts and artisan crafts for sale at Treasures of Eleuthera. Serenity Bay will also provide relaxing spaces exclusively for adults ages 18 and older, with a tranquil beach experience, a dining area, and private cabanas available for reservation. See our guide to tipping on Disney Cruise Line for more info on DCL tipping in general, but yes, tips are almost always welcome.
Don’t just take our word for it, read the US State Department’s advisory, under Safety & Security. The vendors are also extra-aggressive here, though it dies down considerably once you get a block or two away from the cruise terminal. With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises. Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.
Disney and Viator work with large tour companies that generally use nice, clean air-conditioned vans and minibuses. Falmouth, Jamaica has had ongoing problems with extremely aggressive vendors near the port. While Jamaica does have serious crime problems, most of it is found in poor areas of Kingston and Montego Bay. However, outside the port gates there are quite a few souvenir and craft vendors on the street who buttonhole cruise passengers as they go by. Firmly and politely saying “no thanks” is generally enough to get them to leave you alone.
An excursion — also known as a “Port Adventure” on Disney cruise ships — is an organized off-ship activity. You’re always free to leave a cruise ship to explore a port on your own. A Port Adventure is an optional paid experience that gives you greater access and additional benefits. As those of us who have a passion for travel know, regardless of how much time you spend researching and planning, sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. My family has done a lot of excursions, some great, and some that weren’t our favorites. I make sure to note the kinds of excursions that my family loves and others that we can avoid the next time around.
The excursion will include stops at the Ruins of the Anglican Church, Sarah Miller’s Plantation, and the homecoming site. Attendees will learn more about the church’s history, the first settlers, the plantation, and South Eleuthera’s trade. There are so many great excursions (or Port Adventures, as Disney Cruise Line calls them) that it can be pretty overwhelming to choose. If you have been thinking about planning a Disney Cruise Line vacation, but you have lingeringquestions, we want to answer them for you.
Small groups of 5 or 6 passengers set out with an expert guide on board a custom-built 24-foot cruiser. Your destination is the well-protected Ketchikan fishing grounds for an all-day expedition. As any fisher knows, what you catch is just as much up to the fish as it is up to you, but you could find rockfish, cod, flounder, shark, skate, or halibut on the hook. If you’d like to keep what you catch, you can opt to pay a bit extra for custom processing and shipping of your halibut. Those who are fans of the Discovery Channel show Deadliest Catch might be surprised to know that the Aleutian Ballad is now a charter vessel that hosts cruise passengers.

There are several boat tours to pick from, each with different options and pick-up points. Cartagena’s food scene is known for its mix of flavors, from seaside fish to locally grown beef. In Colombia, street food is a must-try experience, whether you’re sipping fresh fruit juice or eating a hot, delicious arepa. Another staple of the Colombian culinary scene is the empanada, perfect for a quick snack. Ceviche, a dish made from raw and cooked fish, is a popular street food.
But it was a new and interesting experience and I’d definitely want to return. Sometimes it takes that first visit to a distant port to learn what to do and then return. Crystal Serenity docked in the bland and dusty industrial area. The city furnished shuttle service for the 900-ft distance to the cruise terminal. Little did I know but the cruise terminal would be the quirky highlight of my day in Cartagena. If you’ve read any of my city guides, you know I’m not a big fan of a ship’s group shore excursions.

Although some crew members choose to walk, it is not advisable to cross the neighborhood of the port on foot. There isn't really much to see as this is a residential area of working people. On a taxi ride, you will see a couple of interesting landmarks.

I much prefer to wander around a city, stopping for lunch or a drink in-between window shopping and mindless meandering. Sometimes there is also a catamaran tour offered in the port. Cartagena's amazing display of impeccably restored buildings of historical significance and beauty are a delight.
The prices in Colombia are marked with a dollar sign, so be sure to remember that the prices you see are in pesos. Most banks in Colombia do not exchange money; you will need to visit a money exchange located in a major city. You will see money changers on the streets of Cartagena, but those are not the best place to do any transactions.
Among the popular cruise lines that visit Cartagena are Crystal Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean. You can walk five minutes to the visitor center or to take a free shuttle bus. While our goal was to get out and discover the city, we saved time at the end of our day for exploring this Cartagena zoo. Secondly, by coming back early to see the port oasis, we were less stressed about being sure we were back to port before the ship sailed.

Once outside, on a large parking lot, the cruise traveler will find officially licensed Taxi drivers and some independent tour operator offering their services. Taxi fares are displayed in small blue signs (US$20 for a single ride to the Old Town; $25 for a 1-hour tour; et cetera). However, be aware that pricing is per car and, therefore, works out cheaper to share a van (up to 8 passengers) than a taxi for 4. Regardless of the official taxi rates, do make sure before entering the taxi that the price is absolutely clear. There are many sites and attractions to enjoy on a cruise calling at Cartagena, but a visit to the Walled Old Town is a MUST for those that have never been in this port. But, in the last decade, the port and its Walled City has been cleaned up (both architecturally and socially) and has become a must-see jewel.

Royal Caribbean's strict policy on underage drinking is in place to protect the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew members. Alcohol consumption can impair judgment and coordination, which can be dangerous in a marine environment. Royal Caribbean wants to ensure that all passengers have a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.
Restrictions on drinks per day with beverage packages
Royal Caribbean's beverage packages include a certain number of drinks per day, which varies depending on the package purchased. The number of drinks included in each package per day is as follows:
Deluxe Beverage Package: 15 alcoholic drinks per day
Premium Beverage Package: Unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
It's important to note that these limits are per person, per day. So, if you purchase a Deluxe Beverage Package, you can have up to 15 alcoholic drinks per day. However, you cannot have 15 alcoholic drinks on one day and then 15 more the next day. The limits reset each day.
If you exceed the drink limit for your package, you will be charged the regular price for each additional drink. So, it's important to keep track of how many drinks you've had and stay within the limits.
